Clean Energy Auditing Course

In partnership with the New York State Energy Research and Development (NYSERDA) Authority, GCC is delighted to offer this FREE 10-week bundle of Clean Energy Auditing courses. This program delivers industry recognized, hands-on training in standard energy in sustained conservation and energy auditing. You will develop practical expertise calculating lighting efficiency, evaluating climate control and insulation, and using infrared technology for both residential and commercial building assessments. Included in this course is the FREE opportunity to sit for the Building Science Principles Certificate of Knowledge exam, offered by the Building Performance Institute (BPI).

CNC Fundamentals

Prerequisite: Basic math skills

Course Overview:

Launch your career in advanced manufacturing with this hands-on Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machining Fundamentals course. Learn to safely operate CNC machines, interpret blueprints, create basic CNC programs, perform machine setup, and inspect finished parts. You’ll also gain an introduction to CAD/CAM software and develop the foundational skills needed for entry-level employment in today’s precision machining industry.

This 40-hour course provides a foundational understanding of the plumbing industry, emphasizing safety and tool usage. You’ll learn about plumbing materials, water supply and drainage systems, basic gas plumbing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and blueprint reading. Welding – Level 1

Build a solid foundation in welding with this hands-on, 96-hour introductory course designed for individuals beginning a career in the skilled trades or looking to develop practical welding skills. Students will learn essential shop safety, welding theory, equipment setup, and proper use of tools while gaining extensive hands-on experience. Training includes an introduction to metal identification, blueprint basics, measuring and layout, weld symbols, and welding terminology. Students will develop fundamental skills in Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (Stick), and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG), with an emphasis on proper technique, weld quality, and safe work practices.

Mechatronics

Mechatronics, Phase 1: Industrial Electronics

Mechatronics, Phase 1: Industrial Electronics focuses on electronic and electrical theory, principles and applications and students develop familiarity with using a wide variety of electrical measuring equipment. Students must have a strong background in electronic and mechanical skills in an industrial environment.

Mechatronics, Phase 2: Industrial Controls and PLCs

Mechatronics, Phase 2: Industrial Controls and PLCs covers interpreting electrical prints, building, testing and trouble-shooting electronic panels and related practical applications. Real-world electrical prints of machine tools used in manufacturing plants and factories are utilized throughout the course. Students also gain an understanding of the techniques and mathematics behind wire sizing, properly sizing conduit and mathematically creating angles and proper bends in electrical-metallic tubing (EMT). Students must have passed Mechatronics, Phase 1: Industrial Electronics or have equivalent skills and experience.

Mechatronics, Phase 3: Advanced Industrial Controls

Mechatronics, Phase 3: Advanced Industrial Controls is designed to maximize PLC and machinery trouble-shooting skills. Key areas include advanced PLC applications and controls’ theory using a fully-functional, scaled-down “Factory Automation Simulator.” The system consists of 4 main factory areas: (1) automated warehousing stacking & storage systems; (2) heat treatment & processing system, complete with turn-table & post-process milling station; (3) laser color sorting & batching system; and (4) 3-axis robotic loading/unloading station with a vacuum-end effecter for parts-handling. Students will gain skills on this multiple-PLC-controlled system featuring system-wide (PLC to PLC) Ethernet IP communication. Students will debug these complex systems using PLCs, panel views and laptops. The main learning objective is the theory, implementation and practical, hands-on understanding of PLCs, their associated electrical devices and how they function and interact with the system’s mechanical hardware. Students must have passed Mechatronics, Phase 2: Industrial Controls & PLCs.

Advanced AC Motors & VFD Course

The primary learning objective of this program is the Theory, Implementation and Practical understanding of Variable Frequency Drives and AC Motors and how they function and interact with each other and the mechanical systems that they drive. In addition we cover methods to debug and analyze these systems when they fail using proper test equipment and methods. This will be an instructor-led class building on the concepts of both our Phase 1 Industrial Electronics & Phase 2 Industrial Controls & PLC Class, which is a prerequisite to this program. Students must have passed Mechatronics, Phase 1: Industrial Electronics and Mechatronics, Phase 2: Industrial Controls & PLCs.

Motor Controls, Transformers & Power Systems

This is an instructor-led class building on the concepts of Advanced AC Motors & VFD.  The primary learning objective of this program is for students to further advance their understanding of Motor Controls and associated devices as they apply to the industrial world. The students will be taking an in-depth look into the application and associated affects of variable frequency drivers, motors, transformers and other non-linear loads and studying their collective effects. Students must have passed Advanced AC Motors & VFD.

Industrial Electric – Level 1

This 101.5-hour course introduces the field of industrial electricity, covering job tasks and new technologies, and offers hands-on experience. It then delves into DC theory, including energy sources, Ohm’s Law, and DC circuits with a focus on calculations. Electrical safety is emphasized through case studies, hazard identification, and essential protocols like LOTO and NFPA 70E. Practical skills in electrical conduit bending, from calculations to complex bends, are taught. Finally, the course guides students through the 2023 National Electric Code, focusing on its structure and practical application.

Our Industrial Electrical Level 2 program is a 101.5-hour class that covers fundamental AC theory, followed by in-depth studies of transformers, basic and advanced motor operation, introductory motor controls, intermediate conduit installation, and a deeper exploration of the National Electrical Code. Basic Air Conditioning & Refrigeration I

Launch or advance your career in the HVACR industry with hands-on training led by experienced instructors. Learn the fundamentals of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, electrical systems, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance using industry-standard equipment. This course provides the practical skills needed for entry-level employment or career advancement. Specifically, this course provides practical experiences with: Split Comfort Systems using Furnaces, indoor coils, and outdoor condensing units (All in operational condition); Ductless Heat pump split systems; high-efficiency boilers with zones; basic window air conditioning units, and an electric “Heat Pump” domestic Hot Water Tank heaters; and iConnect trainers.

EPA 608 Certification

Prepare for the EPA Section 608 Certification exam required for technicians who work with regulated refrigerants. Review Core, Type I, Type II, and Type III certification topics (each of which corresponds to a section of the EPA certification exam) through instructor-led training and hands-on demonstrations. Students who pass all four exams earn the Universal EPA 608 Certification. Once obtained, the EPA-608 certification is good for life. EPA 608 Certification

Bill Hayes, with 40 years in HVAC/R, joins GCC’s BEST Center as the instructor for the Basic Air Conditioning & Refrigeration program. He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology and has extensive experience, including owning an HVAC/R operation and a supply house. Bill has taught HVAC/R in New York State for the past decade and is an EPA-608 Proctor. His expertise and dedication align with the BEST Center’s mission.
