Introduction to Healthful Living

Emphasizes strategies and behaviors which contribute to a healthy lifestyle and overall wellness. Discusses topics such as the dimensions of wellness, stress, drug use and abuse, nutrition, weight control, the human microbiome, fitness, healthy relationships, infectious diseases and safety education. Additional course components include New York State certifications in Child Abuse Mandated Reporter, Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) and School Violence Prevention (SAVE).

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify key terms related to stress management.
2. Identify infectious and chronic diseases which may include: communicable and non-communicable, types, origin, risk factors, treatments or preventive strategies.
3. Explain aspects of drug use, misuse and abuse including addiction, dependency, treatment or recovery.
4. Describe the different aspects of relationships which may include: forming and maintaining positive interpersonal relationships, positive parenting and recognition of negative relationships, including domestic or school violence, bullying or other forms of abuse.
5. Describe the relationship between nutrition and overall wellness.
6. Define the human microbiome and describe its relationship to human health and wellness.
7. Develop a wellness plan focusing on personal assessment and strategies to enhance wellness based on the 5 dimensions of wellness.
