CIN205 - Thriller Films

Catalog Description: Presents an in-depth examination of one of the most popular and elusive of film genres—the suspense thriller—by tracing its history from the early film-noir offerings to the relevant cautionary thrillers of today. Analyzes the structural terrains that comprise the genre and the various theories regarding our fascination with them. Prerequisite: completion of the Genesee Community College reading proficiency.

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
Upon the successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:
1. Distinguish the thriller from other film genres.
2. Identify at least six sub-genres of thriller.
3. Explain the distinctiveness of each of the subgenres of thrillers, with a focus on the impact each has.
4. Explain the ways that thriller films create and resolve suspense.
5. Explain the ways that thriller films force viewers to examine their own morality.
6. Delineate at least five key films within the genre, and how they have influenced or re-defined the definition of a thriller film.
7. Discuss the contribution of at least five directors within the thriller genre.
