HUS106 - Early Childhood Education - Methods and Materials

Credits: 3

Catalog Description: Covers typical characteristics of young children (infant to eight years). Emphasizes learning materials and teaching methods appropriate for use with various age groups. Studies child guidance techniques, theories of play, quality program characteristics, and lesson plan designs. Requires demonstrations of effective lesson plan and story telling techniques.

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. For each of the following age groupings give three typical characteristics and one way a teacher or parent could promote each: Infants (birth-1); Toddlers (1-3); Preschoolers (3- 5); Kindergartners (5-6).*
2. Describe four characteristics that define a child as gifted and explain three teaching suggestions for working with a gifted child.
3. Define ADHD and give five recommendations for parents and teachers working with children with ADHD.
4. List four major categories of guidance, resulting in "self discipline."
5. List and describe the three parenting communication styles used with children.
6. Give the four goals of misbehavior.
7. List and explain the four theories of play and for each state one benefit.
8. List the nine components to a lesson plan.
9. Design and demonstrate a lesson plan.

* This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the Comprehensive Assessment Plan of the college. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.
