MUS108 - Music at the Movies

Catalog Description: Surveys the history of film music from the silent era to the present with a focus on Hollywood narrative films. Explores the role and relation of music to the plot and visual elements of film.

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
Upon the successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:
1. Describe the function of music in a narrative film.
2. Categorize films into the correct historical time period.
3. Compare and contrast film soundtracks from different eras in the history of film music.
4. Connect the experience of the music track to the visual and narrative elements in a film.
5. Assess interactions between music and drama in various film genres.
6. Explain how music is used to enhance a film.
7. Assess how the score shapes a film.
8. Differentiate among different styles of film scoring.
9. Analyze scoring for animated film or television.
10. Identify important composers and describe their contributions to film music.
11. Analyze film soundtracks from a variety of film styles.
12. Discuss the evolution of technology in music for film.
13. Discuss the use of popular music in modern film scores.
14. Reflect upon the emotive power of music or sound in film.
