MUS110 - Music History 1

Catalog Description: Traces the chronological development of music as an art form from the Middle Ages to the Baroque movement (1750).

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
At the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

1.Identify music from Medieval to Baroque periods of Western Music by completing a listening journal (written summary as denoted on the LISTENING JOURNAL FORM) of at least 60-75 entries (all pieces of music on the CD which accompanies the required text).
2.Present to a live audience, using audio, video, lecture and performance skills, a minimum 30 minute research presentation that combines composers, musical styles, political, historical, and scientific events of a selected period.*
3.Discuss orally or in writing the sociological/historical setting of a minimum of one piece of music, noting the connections between the setting and the particular type of music within that period.
4.Identify orally or in writing music from a minimum of 15 selected major composers when listening to unidentified compositions.

*This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the College's Comprehensive Assessment Plan. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data (see Assessing Student Learning Outcomes form) and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office.
