NST201 - Materials, Safety, and Equipment Overview for Nanotechnology

Credits: 3

Catalog Description: Introduces concepts of size and scale in relation to nanotechnology; environmental, health and safety concerns of nanotechnology; structure of matter on the Nano scale including concept of nanosurface and energy at the Nano scale; classification of materials by their physical, chemical, electrical, optical, and mechanical properties; basic vacuum systems; Nano characterization and fabrication equipment and processes. Pre-requisite: CHE101 and MAT121 OR CHE 101 and MAT 102 with a ā€˜Cā€™ or better; and PHY 122 with a ā€˜Cā€™ or better OR concurrent enrollment in PHY 122

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
Upon the successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:
1. Explain the basic properties of Nano.
2. Describe Nano safety practices related to laboratory, environmental, and personal.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of principles of vacuum based systems.
4. Compare and contrast the structure of the matter on the Nano scale and macro scale.
5. Classify materials based on their chemical properties.
6. Classify materials based on their physical properties.
7. Describe general Nano fabrication processing contamination and damage control.
8. Explain appropriate applications of various characterization instruments.
9. Identify appropriate technical literature for nanotechnology research.
