PED143 - Principles of Fly Tying and Fly Fishing

Catalog Description: Catalog Description: Provides students of all experience levels with a practical introduction to the lifetime sport of fly fishing. Presents students with the many aspects of fly tying and fly fishing for salmon, trout and bass so that they can enjoy fishing success for the remainder of their active adult lives.

Lecture: 2 hrs.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
Upon the successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate the appropriate use of fly fishing equipment.
2. Demonstrate the fly casting techniques.
3. Identify the basic entomology that relates to fly fishing.
4. Define the various stages of insect development.
5. Demonstrate how to tie artificial flies.
6. Identify basic salmon and trout species.
7. Explain how water structure or hydraulics influence fish behavior.
8. Identify and describe the environmental influences upon watersheds that impact our fisheries.
9. Describe the techniques that contribute to safe fishing practices.
10. Practice ethical behaviors that contribute to positive fishing experiences.
