PED177 - Adaptive Physical Education

Credits: 2

Catalog Description: Focuses on individuals who have a disability limiting their participation in the regular physical education offerings or individuals who wish to learn to assist a person with a disability. Students develop and participate in an individualized, self-designed and modified sport, game or exercise program and learn to select activities for individuals with disabilities which will be of value in meeting immediate and future physical and motor fitness. Three class hours.

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
Upon successful completion of this course as documented through writing, objective testing, case studies, laboratory practice, and/or classroom discussion, the student will be able to:

1. Name and describe in writing difficulties while presenting an activity and assisting individuals with a disability in that activity.
2. *Identify in writing a minimum of three appropriate activities associated with various disabilities.
3. Demonstrate knowledge concerning a Learning Disability by submitting an informative paper.
4. Demonstrate knowledge concerning an Adapted Leisure/Recreation activity for the Disabled population by submitting an informative paper.
5. Describe in writing the methods or techniques used to have a client become successful in their activity (ex. cooking, exercising, bowling etc.).
* This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the Comprehensive Assessment Plan of the college. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.
