PED271 - Principles of Coaching

Credits: 3

Catalog Description: Introduces high school and college level coaching. Presents coaching philosophy, roles and responsibilities, legal requirements, discipline, respect, motivation, practice planning, teaching methodology, conditioning and coaching ethics. Includes New York State mandated Child Abuse Prevention Workshop, SAVE Legislation (Schools Against Violence in Education), Alcohol and Tobacco Use and Abuse, and Signs and Symptoms of Drug Use. Mandated Reporter and SAVE Legislation Certification available.

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
Upon the successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:
1. Identify New York State and National Coaching requirements.
2. Identify the role the New York State Public High School Athletic Association plays in athletics.
3. Develop a personal coaching style statement, based on analysis of other coaching styles.
4. Identify and describe qualities and characteristics of effective coaches.
5. Describe motivational techniques used in athletics.
6. Discuss the business aspects of coaching.
7. Design a full sport specific practice session.
8. Identify the legal responsibilities coaches face.
9. Develop evaluation tools that may be used by a coach throughout a season.
10. Identify the important historical legal issues that affect athletics.
