PED273 - Principles Personal Training

Credits: 3

Catalog Description: Introduces the foundations of personal training. Prepares students for certification in personal training or for pursuing a career in fitness center management. Discusses basic principles including functional anatomy of the human body, biomechanics, exercise physiology, nutrition for performance and health, and weight management techniques. Provides hands-on training in pre-exercise assessment, flexibility assessment, resistance training techniques, and cardiovascular training techniques. Introduces design of an individualized workout plan for varying populations.

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
Upon the successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:
1. Identify aspects of functional anatomy of the human body as they relate to personal training.
2. Compare and contrast Type I and Type II muscle fibers’ impact on performance of a client.
3. Discuss physiological energy systems.
4. Identify the impact nutrition has on training.
5. Measure physiological data such as: body composition, body mass index or bioelectrical impedance.
6. Design a pre-exercise screening tool to assess a client's readiness for exercise participation.
7. Evaluate a client's current fitness level.
8. Design a 6-week training program for a client based on that client's current fitness level and training goals.
9. Identify strategies for losing weight.
10. Identify strategies for gaining weight.
