PHO103 - Introduction to Black & White Photography

Credits: 3

Catalog Description: Presents fundamentals of camera operation and principles of visualization and composition. Emphasizes darkroom procedures, film processing, and selective printing techniques. Two class hours, two lab hours. Students must provide their own photographic supplies.

Lecture: 2 hrs.

Lab: 2 hrs.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
Upon the successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate the proper use of manual cameras (aperture & shutter speed settings).
2. Use industry-standard vocabulary of photography as appropriate.
3. Discuss the contributions made by the masters of photography, 1839-present.
4. Process black & white photographic film correctly.
5. Produce quality enlargements from specific contact sheet negatives.
6. Identify the most effective negatives for making an enlargement that is qualifiably sound.
7. Critique photographs for technical characteristics, such as focus, framing or density.
8. Produce a print portfolio containing exhibition-quality photographs.
