PLG122 - Tort Law

Catalog Description: Examines the principles of premises and personal liability, including intentional tort law, negligence law, product liability, strict liability, mass tort liability and affirmative defenses to causes of action sounding in tort liability.

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
Upon the successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:
1. Describe the role a paralegal plays as a member of a tort litigation team.
2. Identify the prima facie elements of various intentional torts.
3. Identify the four (4) prima facie elements of a negligence lawsuit.
4. Discuss the application of the concept of foreseeability in a tort action.
5. Explain the concept of legal causation.
6. Identify and describe various types of legal remedies.
7. Describe the essential statutory requirements of a wrongful death action.
8. Draft a complaint in a personal injury lawsuit.
9. Describe the four (4) essential elements of a negligence action. Describe the three (3) elements
of a strict liability action.
10. Apply the Code of Professional Responsibility to a legal problem.
11. Identify and describe various affirmative defenses to premise liability and negligence, intentional torts, and premises.
12. Explain the concepts of joint and several liability.
