PSG110 - Polysomnography 1

Catalog Description: Introduces the major concepts of sleep medicine including the history of sleep medicine, the role and the communication, time management, infection control, basic patient assessment, safety and professional expectations of the polysomnographic technologist. Students will have the opportunity to have direct observation in an associated sleep center or lab. Prerequisite: Admission to the Polysomnographic Technology Program. Prerequisite or corequisite: BIO150 or BIO152; corequisite: PSG LB1

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
Upon the successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:
1. Identify key people involved in the development of sleep medicine and technology.
2. Provide an overview of the history and current practice of sleep medicine.
3. Explain the purpose of professional accreditation and the role of sleep organizations.
4. Describe the ethical and professional behavior expectations of the polysomnographic technologist.
5. Discuss a brief overview of sleep disorders.
6. List the classifications of sleep disorders as outlined by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).
7. Describe the features and symptoms of various sleep disorders.
8. Identify the social or personal impact of specific sleep disorders.
9. Identify the impact of shift work and describe methods to effectively work night shifts.
10. Discuss the responsibilities of a healthcare professional.
11. Demonstrate the proper techniques for hand washing, patient positioning and infection control.
12. Identify learning techniques to help pass the sleep technologist board exam.
