PSY250 - Statistics for the Social Sciences

Credits: 3

Catalog Description: Presents an overview of techniques used by social scientists for organizing, computing, interpreting, presenting and reporting data in American Psychological Association (APA) documentation style. Emphasis will be on analysis within the context of social science research paradigms. Specific topics include: measures of central tendency, variability, and shape; tests of association and inference. Prerequisites: PSY 101 and completion of the Genesee Community College Math Proficiency. (Note: MAT 108, MAT 116, and MAT 117 are not accepted.)

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate how quantitative analysis is used for scientific problem solving.*

2. Identify, collect, calculate and analyze data, using appropriate statistical strategies across different types of research questions and hypotheses.*

3. Interpret quantitative data displayed in statistics, graphs and tables, including statistical symbols in research reports.*

4. Extrapolate the meaning of statistical analyses in everyday language and professional formats (e.g. graphs, tables and words) across different types of research questions and hypotheses.*

* This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the Comprehensive Assessment Plan of the college. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.

10. Single sample t-test – comparing a group mean with a benchmark.
11. Independent t-test – comparing the means of two groups.
12. Dependent t-test – comparing two means for related groups.
13. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA).
14. Correlation.
15. Regression.
16. Chi-square.
