SPA102 - Elementary Spanish 2
Catalog Description: Strengthens Spanish listening, speaking, reading and writing skills acquired in Elementary Spanish I. Emphasizes the ability to use and understand Spanish in context at the high-novice level. Prepares students to interact with members of diverse cultures. See Advisement Homepage for Placement Guidelines. Instructor determines final placement. Prerequisite: SPA 101 or equivalent.
Lecture: 3 hrs.
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Speaking: Employ effective everyday speaking skills such as asking and answering spontaneous questions, carrying on conversations, interviewing, and making oral presentations. Demonstrate oral proficiency and the ability to engage in spontaneous communication using productive and receptive skills in the target language at the high-novice level through completion of an oral exam that will be formally evaluated using a standardized grading rubric.*
2. Listening: Understand the main idea of conversations and passages and extract detailed information from a given passage.
3. Reading: Answer comprehension questions about, summarize and paraphrase selections such as advertisements, dialogs, paragraphs, letters, and news articles.
4. Writing: Write journals, dialogs, paragraphs, letters and/or essays using vocabulary studied in class. At least one of which will be an essay or dialog of at least 250 words that will be formally evaluated using a grading rubric.
5. Culture: Identify connections and contrasts between cultures. Discuss and describe key aspects of Hispanic, Latin and/or Spanish culture, traditions and values through the completion of a cultural essay in Spanish of at least 250 words that will be evaluated using a standardized grading rubric.*
Each course objective will be evaluated through a minimum of two formally evaluated assignments. Each course will include a minimum of five homework assignments or quizzes and two closed-book exams. In online courses a synchronous oral evaluation may replace the closed book exams.
* This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the Comprehensive Assessment Plan of the college. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.
Making generalizations, hypothesizing, summarizing, issuing invitations, asking for/offering help, , expressing preference, approval/disapproval, narrating, explaining reasons, making suggestions, expressing corrections, proposing a course of action, , giving commands, comparing, contrasting, being hospitable, expressing concern, commenting on a topic, passing on information, making telephone calls.*
Expansion of topics covered in SPA 101 with the addition of shopping, clothes, restaurants, vacations, holidays, travel and tourism, free time, social life, health and the body.*
Continuation of irregular present tense verbs, demonstrative adjectives and pronouns, direct and indirect object pronouns, present progressive, preterit forms, imperfect forms, preterit vs. imperfect, reflexive verbs, commands, "por" vs. "para."*
Comparing and contrasting cultures. Identifying oneÃÂ¢ÃÂÃÂs own cultural constructs. Awareness of current events, sports, food, leisure activities, geography, history, holidays, art and music of the Spanish-speaking world.
Comprehends short conversations on simple topics. Requires some repetition and /or circumlocution. Understands main idea of longer passages with unfamiliar content.
Initiates and sustains conversation with some hesitation and few grammatical errors. Makes use of circumlocution. Pronunciation is comprehensible to a native speaker used to dealing with foreigners, may need to repeat.
Understands simple narrative and descriptive authentic materials. Uses cognates and deduces meaning from context, reads for details and makes use of visual clues and background knowledge.
Composes well-organized paragraphs and dialogs using vocabulary studied and common structures. Expresses comprehensible present, future and past ideas. Errors may occur with more complex structures.
