THE236 - Lighting the Stage for Theatre and Entertainment

Credits: 3

Catalog Description: Introduces principles and procedures in designing and executing theatre and concert lighting. Examines the operation of lighting instruments and equipment. Two lecture, three laboratory hours.

Lecture: 2 hrs.

Lab: 3 hrs.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
Upon the successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:
1. Discuss the basic physics of light within the context of stage lighting.
2. Identify and describe the elements of a theatrical lighting system (lighting fixtures, dimmer systems, LED and moving light technology, etc.).
3. Create appropriate lighting analysis for theatrical content (dance, music, theatre, etc.).
4. Create appropriate lighting design for theatrical content (dance, music, theatre, etc.).
5. Perform all necessary lighting techniques as needed in a theatrical production (programming and operating lighting consoles, hanging and focusing, circuiting and patching, operating follow spots etc.).
6. Apply the functions of stage lighting and the controllable qualities of light to support directorial concepts in theatrical applications.
