LDR261 - Leadership, Citizenship & Professionalism in a Community College
Catalog Description: This course will engage participants in the identification and refinement of the knowledge and skills necessary to the nurturing of a student-centered community college work environment that promotes integrity, professionalism, high standards of service, and unity-of-purpose. Sample topics to be covered include: the functions and services of a college; student and employee interaction; expectations of external stakeholders; service processes across departments; and current social, political, and economic issues in higher education. Sample skills developed or reinforced include: communicating effectively across constituencies; building and empowering teams; formal and informal collaboration; self-management; and organizational interdependence. Curriculum will include coverage of key institutional policies and procedures; selected policies and procedures from the State University of New York (SUNY) and the New York State Education Department (NYSED); the Middle States Commission of Higher Education (MSCHE) Standards for Accreditation and Requirements of Affiliation; and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Competencies for Community College Leaders.
LDR272 - Organizational Management Skills for Community College Personnel
Catalog Description: Developed specifically for community college employees readying for advancement opportunities, this course focuses specifically on the development of skills necessary for a variety of leadership roles. Administrators new to their positions, teaching faculty, and support and professional staff will engage in various knowledge and skills-building activities designed to enhance and build upon current knowledge and skills sets. The curriculum will include foundational management concepts common across all job descriptions, combined with more specialized curriculum focused on the participant’s contractual function. Sample topics covered include: Interpersonal relationship development; negotiations and conflict management; messaging in communication; management of expectations; job performance appraisal; and change leadership. Prerequisite: LDR 271.
LDR273 - Advanced Communication Skills for Community College Personnel
Catalog Description: Effective communication underpins every successful endeavor in most organizations. For success in a community college setting, leaders and aspiring leaders must be able to assist others by adeptly applying a variety of communication techniques, and determining which technique to use in which situation. This course will provide students with opportunities for self-reflective learning as a means of encouraging participants to modify their personal communication style to become better leaders. Prerequisites: LDR 271 and 272.
