Patient Care Technician Program

The healthcare industry is currently undergoing major changes in the manner in which patient care is provided. In addition to medical assistants, this restructuring has resulted in the introduction of a new category of healthcare worker trained to perform a variety of patient care services. Patient Care Technicians possess the technical skills necessary to service complex patient personal care and medical assisting issues including the implementation of selected portions of a specific care plan that may include rehabilitation services, basic bedside care, collection of laboratory specimens, phlebotomy and EKG’s. They work alongside doctors, nurses, medical assistants, and other healthcare providers to oversee and monitor patients.

This Patient Care Technician program will provide you with the basic medical knowledge and hands on skills necessary to perform or obtain technical diagnostic testing and perform direct patient care.

Program Objectives

After completing this program, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the role of the Patient Care Technician
  • Explain Confidentiality and HIPAA
  • Recognize Medical Terminology & Anatomy and Physiology
  • Know the function of the patient care department in a variety of settings (hospital, clinic, office, mobile service, long term care facilities)
  • Describe the various health care facilities
  • Demonstrate care & safety of patients, medical & legal aspects and work ethics
  • Communicate effectively in a professional healthcare environment
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills and human behavior
  • Describe the anatomy of each of the body systems to include the heart, conduction system, circulation of the heart and blood vessels
  • Describe aseptic technique and infection prevention
  • Understand the nursing process
  • Understand bed making, personal hygiene and grooming
  • Explain the concepts of urinary, bowel elimination, nutrition and fluids
  • Describe basic respiratory care
  • Describe disease states and wound care
  • Understand rehabilitation and restorative care
  • Explain how to measure vital signs
  • Explain how to observe and report patient condition
  • Understand mobility and body position
  • Describe toileting, incontinence and catheter care
  • Perform documenting intake and output

Certification Opportunities

After completing this program, learners will have the opportunity to take the leading national/industry-recognized certification exam(s) essential to entry-level employment in this fast-growing field.

Optional Volunteer Externship Opportunity

Learners who complete this program are eligible to participate in an optional volunteer externship opportunity with a local company/agency/organization whose work aligns with this area of study in order to gain valuable hands-on experience.  As learners progress through their eLearning program, an Externship Coordinator will reach out to coordinate placement.

Note: Additional documentation including health records, immunizations, drug-screening, criminal background checks, etc. may be required by the externship facility.

Phlebotomy Technician Program

The phlebotomist is a vital member of the clinical laboratory team, whose main function is to obtain patient’s blood specimens by venipuncture and micro collection for testing purposes. Phlebotomists are employed throughout the healthcare system including hospitals, neighborhood health centers, medical group practices, HMO’s, public health facilities, veteran hospitals, insurance carriers, and in other healthcare settings. The demand for phlebotomy technicians has increased substantially with the overall complexity of healthcare services and the risks of infectious disease

This 90-hour Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Students will become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures completely and safely. Classroom and lab work include terminology, anatomy and physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods.

National Certification

Students who complete this program will have the opportunity to pursue the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) Exam. NWCA National Certification: This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National Workforce Career Association (NWCA) Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) Exam.

Prerequisites

Students should have a high school diploma or GED, a strong reading-comprehension level and good, basic math ability.

Supervision Certificate

This intensive, 30-hour course will teach you how to become an outstanding supervisor and an indispensable asset to your company or organization. You will learn how to develop a supervisory style that best fits you, how to get things done more efficiently and how to improve your overall effectiveness as a leader. This course will provide practical, easy to understand and insightful techniques to improve your day-to-day skills in managing employees. The course is designed to help you build confidence and provide a solid foundation from which to grow. Each week you will learn new skills which you can immediately put into action back in the workplace. The 10 modules cover a broad spectrum of skills applicable to any work environment.

The Leader’s Toolkit: Lead, Communicate & Improve

Workshop 1: Uncovering Your Leadership Style and Its Impact on Professional Interactions

Designed to explore the guiding principles of leadership and how your unique journey has influenced your leadership beliefs and approach. You will identify life and career highlights to help you discover the leadership values that drive your style and how to use this awareness as your “North Star” when leading yourself and others. We will also discuss professionalism in the workplace through the lens of credibility, commitment, results, and trust. You will walk away with an understanding of how your actions influence others’ perceptions and your individual and organizational influence.

Objectives:

  • Recognize how your experiences have shaped your perception of leadership and your leadership values.
  • Identify your top values “show up” in the workplace.
  • Learn how to share your leadership approach so you can “walk the talk” as a leader.
  • Describe professionalism in terms of credibility, commitment, results, and trust.

Workshop 2: Managing the Art of Difficult Conversations

  1. Mastering the Art of Essential Conversations is a highly interactive workshop designed to provide you with practical skills to conduct difficult (essential) conversations more effectively. During the session, you will learn four (4) essential skills used in difficult conversations: Open-Mindedness, Active Listening, Self-Awareness, and Adaptability. You will also be able to apply the Reframe, Refocus, and Redirect framework when essential conversations don’t go “as planned.”

    Objectives:

    • Recognize motives by exploring the “stories we tell.”
    • Find shared meaning and mutual ground for essential conversations.
    • Identify strategies to manage emotional reactions and draw on essential skills throughout a conversation.
    • Use the 3R (Reframe, Refocus, Redirect) framework to handle conflict productively.

    Homework: 10-30 minutes

    • Identify at least 3 real-world (difficult) conversation opportunities.
    • Prepare for OR Conduct a real-world conversation before 1:1 coaching.

Workshop 3: Feedback Fundamentals: Coach for Success

This highly interactive workshop offers practical skills to deliver specific and actionable feedback while aligning your coaching style to meet employees where they are. During the session, you will learn the Situational-Behavior-Impact model—a simple feedback mechanism for providing positive and constructive feedback. You will discover the power of using “feedforward” and the A-S-K framework to Assess and Align with the coachee, Set Goals, and Keep Track of progress to sustain long-term behavior change.

Objectives:

  • Describe the difference between feedback and coaching.
  • Align with the coachee on ability and attitude and adapt.
  • Tactics to adapt your coaching style to meet employees where they are at.
  • Practice giving S-B-I Feedback and the ASK Coaching to Align, Set Goals, and Keep Track of Progress.

Through several partnerships, The BEST Center offers various different noncredit certificate programs online.  Some include Medical Billing and Coding, Real Estate Licensing, Auto Repair Technician and Pharmacy Technician. The BEST Center has partnered with Education To Go, Condensed Curriculum International, the CE Shop and UGotClass to provide online programs.
