The Developmental Disabilities Studies Certificate covers a number of the topics required for employees by OPWDD (Office for Persons with Developmental Disabilities). Lifestyles of individuals with developmental disabilities have changed dramatically over the past twenty years as they have moved out of institutions and into community residences.

GCC’s certificate program addresses the skills and knowledge necessary for you to succeed as a human service worker. The certificate may be completed in one year (full-time) and can be taken separately or as part of the Human Services AAS Degree Program.

Why GCC?

The courses in the Developmental Disabilities Studies program cover topics that emphasize skills and knowledge for enhancing the independence of individuals. This program will also allow you will also be given the opportunity to participate in an internship and apply your newly learn skills.

In addition, this certificate can expand your employment options if you are planning to or currently work in this career area.

Upon successful completion of the AS Human Services program, the graduate will be able to:

  1. Apply critical thinking skills required to be effective in the field of developmental disabilities.
  2. Demonstrate adequate preparation for further career development in the field of developmental disabilities.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of the basic techniques for effectively helping people as a Certificate of Developmental Disabilities graduate.
  4. Utilize specific interpersonal competencies necessary for effective functioning in a helping capacity as gained through experiential training in the field of developmental disabilities.
  5. Employ proficient written and verbal communication skills, including the appropriate uses of technology as required for a Certificate of Developmental Disabilities graduate.
  6. Identify the full spectrum of a diverse community and discuss appropriate techniques for working with diverse individuals.
  7. Recognize and apply the ethical standards within the field of developmental disabilities.
